Some memories belong to us. Others belong to a time before us.
Today I found myself wondering what September 11 means to someone who wasn't old enough to remember it.
For some of us, there is a very specific memory. I can still picture myself driving to work with the radio on, thinking about the day ahead. Then came the report of a plane hitting one of the towers.
When I walked into our office, the look on my partner's face told me there was more to the story. Another plane had hit the second tower.
I remember the tears. I remember realizing that so many lives had suddenly changed, including people whose families lived far beyond America.
And then I thought about someone who wasn't born yet.
They didn't hear the first report on the radio. They didn't watch the towers fall that morning.
But they have grown up hearing us talk about it.
I wonder what September 11 feels like to them.
