Playing Chess
Chess is a game that teaches life lessons and how to move the pieces around.
A few of the lessons are:
It takes a lot of practice to become proficient.
You must be determined and committed if you are to excel further.
Stay focused on the job at hand when you play. Distractions will try to steal your attention, and that could be costly.
Control your emotions. Don't let your opponent see you sweat.
Think objectively before you do anything.
Remember that every decision will have a consequence.
Author and writer Brian G. Jett, a friend of mine, is a storyteller and shares his tale about a father and son and how chess both divided them and brought them back together again.
Brian's story, Playing Chess, starts this way:
Brent walked past the familiar park where he'd often visit and sit in close proximity to five or six old men who had erected an old foldout card table to play chess. It had become an ever-increasing fascination to watch the old men play for hours on end. Although it had been distracting him from his studies at the seminary he attended some 300 yards from the park, something kept driving his regular visits to the chess masters that would begin playing early in the morning; often they'd still be playing until late into the afternoon.
