Can you keep your emotions out of the criticism game? What do I mean? When you are criticized, the other person is looking for a reaction. What is the criticism about? Is someone trying to help you or hurt you? Look, criticism is someone else's opinion. They may be spot on with the observation they are sharing, maybe there's a bit of truth in what they are saying, or they can be totally wrong. Only you will know the answer.
One thing to protect yourself is this reminder: You are in control of yourself and your emotions. You don't have to let someone else decide how you feel, do you? So don't react emotionally. In fact, you don't have to react at all. You can say, "Thank you for your opinion," because the conversation doesn't need to go any further unless you want it to.
Remember, it's easy to be a critic; it's much harder to be an effective communicator. How you react is always your choice.
