Understanding Who You Were Becoming

I think about how often we are willing to give other people understanding, but sometimes forget to offer that same kindness to ourselves.

When someone makes a mistake because they didn't have all the information, we usually see it differently. We think, "If they had known better, they would have done better." We understand they were learning. We understand they were human.

But do we give ourselves that same grace?

There are moments in all of our lives when we look back and wish we had handled something differently.

Maybe we said something we wish we could take back.
Maybe we made a choice we wouldn't make today.
Maybe we missed something that now seems so obvious.

Maybe we are being a little unfair to the person we used to be. They were learning too. They were trying to make choices with the understanding they had at that moment.

The truth is, we are all learning as we go. The person we are today has learned things the person we were back then had not learned yet. That is why we might look back and see things differently now.

That isn't failure. That is growth.

So the next time you look back at a past version of yourself, maybe ask a different question.

Instead of "Why did I do that?" maybe ask, "What was I still learning?"

How might seeing yourself with more compassion change the way you move forward?
