Have you noticed that everybody has an opinion about everything and everyone? But what exactly is the definition of an opinion? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, an opinion is:

a view, judgment, or appraisal formed in the mind about a particular matter
belief stronger than impression and less strong than positive knowledge
a generally held view
a formal expression of judgment or advice by an expert - example: My doctor says that I need an operation, but I'm going to get a second opinion.
the formal expression (as by a judge, court, or referee) of the legal reasons and principles upon which a legal decision is based

For most of us, we have an opinion based on what we think, not necessarily what is true. This is why what other people try to state as fact should be taken with a grain of salt unless they are bona fide experts. And even then, you might want a second professional opinion.
