" It is a curious subject of observation and inquiry, whether hatred and love be not the same thing at the bottom. Each, in its utmost development, supposes a high degree of intimacy and heart-knowledge; each renders one individual dependent for the food of his affections and spiritual life upon another; each leaves the passionate lover, or the no less passionate hater, forlorn and desolate by the withdrawal of his object."

A Spoken Word
A spoken word may be "small" like acorn
If sown on fertile ground it a sapling turn
With constant encouraging words the ground to fertilize
Soon a strong shady tree from the ground will arise
A harsh word carelessly spoken today
May just sow the seed of dismay
From this criticism-hardened ground soon manifest
A thorny, prickly plant that offers no rest
Choose your words with thoughtfulness and care
Lest they destroy a spirit or bring despair
Speak words of hope and cheer and uplift a soul
May our words heal and bless; may that be our constant goal
