Trying To Control What You Cannot

Life has a way of forcing us into moments we cannot control. Mr. Frankl lived this truth in the harshest way possible during his time in the concentration camps. I would never compare my story to his, but I understand the reality of facing something I could not change.

You see when my husband died of cancer, I had no choice but to keep going, even though everything inside me wanted life to stop. The initial stress was incredible as I grasped the reality of what happened and tried to figure out what I was going to do. Many days have been difficult for me and I still experience moments to work through as I create my new life without him. And each day gets a little bit better because I decided and committed to continue to live a as joyful of a life as possible, no matter what.

So how do we survive the things we cannot change and move forward? For me, it meant accepting reality, even when I hated it. It meant choosing to take one step, then another, even without knowing where those steps would lead. It meant leaning on faith, on people who cared, and on the small daily practices that calmed my mind and body.

What about you? Think about a time when life handed you something completely outside your control. What did you do that was healthy for your mind, body, and soul? What carried you through?

Pause and breathe before you react.
Write down one thing you can do today.
Call someone who loves you and let them listen.
