What do impromptu comedy performances have to do with your daily work, life choices, and chances of career advancement? Well, just about everything. Especially if you believe, as does David Charles, who holds the chair of the Department of Theater Arts & Dance, that no life or career can be perfectly planned.
"In improv," he says, "every next choice is decided in the moment. That's the same in the workplace and in life."
Example: Have you ever planned a meal and found out you don't have a key ingredient you need at the last minute? Now what? You're not sure what to do in this situation. You could improvise and substitute something entirely different to the recipe. How will it taste? You never know until you try it.
Maybe you encounter a construction zone you hadn't anticipated. Do you wait in traffic, take the recommended route according to the detour signs, or improvise by taking another option?
