What We Cannot See

The Pain Behind a Face

I noticed something last weekend while sitting in the ER. I suddenly found myself looking at the other people around me and wondering what had brought each of them there.

You really don't know what someone is carrying.

I knew why I was there, although I didn't yet have a name for the pain I was experiencing. Waiting for the tests brought some relief when I had answers, but there was still angst in knowing what might come next.

It made me think about how easily we can look at someone and make assumptions about their life. We see a face, a reaction, maybe a difficult moment, and think we understand what we're seeing.

But we don't.

Every person in that room had a story I couldn't see.

Maybe that's what stayed with me most. Pain is something we all understand, even when the reasons for it are different.

And perhaps a little more kindness begins there... with remembering that we rarely know the whole story.

Take care and may today bring you a little more peace, a little more laughter, and a reason to keep believing.
